Ultra-marathoner from Siliguri prepares for international races, seeks support for athletes

SILIGURI,: A marathoner from Siliguri has urged the government to extend greater support to sports beyond cricket, pointing out that many talented youths struggle for international recognition due to lack of funding and institutional backing.

Debabrata Ghosh, a prominent ultra-marathoner from Deshbandhu Para, is set to participate in upcoming marathons in the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, England and Brazil, beginning May 3 from Prague. The event is regarded as a world-class race, known for its scenic route through the historic centre of the city.

Ghosh has already completed over 47 marathons and ultra-marathons across 25 countries and is widely recognised in the trail running community for taking on some of the world’s most gruelling courses. He is currently on a mission to conquer the “Seven Summits.”

He has also participated in the Berlin Marathon, the Malnad Ultra in India, and the Caucasus Ultra Trail, besides several major events in Kolkata, Guwahati and other cities. In total, he has covered nearly 12,000 km in competitive races.

On Monday, Ghosh was felicitated and provided financial support by social worker Kalyan Debnath at Bagdogra. Debnath, who resides in New York, is currently visiting his hometown and has been actively supporting sportspersons and those in need.

Apart from running, Ghosh is also a professional climber and has summited peaks such as Mt Aconcagua in South America, among others.

During the felicitation, Debnath presented a bouquet, a cash contribution and a traditional ‘khada’. “Marathoner and climber Ghosh has not only made India proud but has also represented the country in 47 nations. I feel honoured to support sportspersons like him,” he said.

Ghosh said, “The government gives more priority to cricket, but there are many talented players in other sports who struggle due to lack of support. I am representing India at my own expense, and participating in events across Europe and other countries is very costly.”

He expressed gratitude to the Debnath family for their financial assistance and encouragement towards sports and patriotism.
