13th straight title for
EMRS Gangyap in CBSE Cluster 1 NE Region Basketball Championship
GANGTOK,: The Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS), Gangyap from remote
West Sikkim has bagged the CBSE Cluster 1 NE Region Girls Basketball
Championship for a record 13th consecutive time.
The
latest championship title came on Wednesday when the EMRS Gangyap girls’
basketball team, popularly known as ‘Gangyap Girls’ scored an emphatic 51-3
victory over Army Public School, Jorhat in the finals held at MBRS Guwahati.
The CBSE
NE regional championship was held from September 23 to 25.
It was a
brilliant display of sheer dominance by the under-19 girls team from EMRS
Gangyap against quite a good team from Jorhat. Led by team captain Anela Bhutia,
the girls continued their unbeaten streak at the NE regional games since 2010,
it was informed.
Hissey
Ongmu Bhutia was adjudged as the ‘best player of the tournament’ while the
highest scorer was Pinki Ongmu Bhutia, both from EMRS Gangyap.
Making it
a double delight, the EMRS Girls u-14 team also won the gold in their category
in the NE championship. They were taking part in the tournament for the first
time.
Led by
Tsomula Bhutia, the EMRS Girls u-14 team blanked Gurukul Grammer Academy,
Guwahati 38-0 in the finals to win their first ever title.
The best
player was Tsomula Bhutia while Alvina Limboo was highest scorer. Both study in
class VIII.
Both
teams from EMRS Gangyap have now qualified for the CBSE Nationals that will be
played in Madhya Pradesh later this year, informed EMRS school principal
Sidharth Yonzone .
Former
players of EMRS Gangyap and now working as teachers, Pema Lhamu Bhutia and
Tshogyal Dolma Bhutia were the team managers of the under-19 and under-14
categories respectively.
Over 40
teams participated in the tournament.
Sandip
Tandon, Regional Officer CBSE Guwahati, was present as chief guest for the
closing ceremony and gave away the medals and the trophies.
