In the age of social media and instant
access to information, mental health has become a widely discussed topic.
Increased awareness has encouraged many people to pay closer attention to their
emotional well-being. However, this positive development has also given rise to
a concerning trend: self-diagnosis. Many individuals now rely on online
quizzes, short videos, and social media posts to identify mental health
conditions. While these resources can raise awareness, they cannot replace
professional evaluation. Mental health conditions are complex, and symptoms
such as stress, anxiety, sadness, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating often
overlap. As a result, self-diagnosis can lead to confusion, unnecessary worry,
and inaccurate conclusions.
There are several reasons why
self-diagnosis should be avoided:
Instead of
immediately labelling ourselves, experts encourage open conversations about our
feelings. Friends, family, teachers, and mentors can offer support, but
persistent emotional difficulties should be assessed by qualified mental health
professionals. Mental health awareness should encourage understanding,
conversation, and access to professional care—not self-diagnosis. While
learning about mental health is important, it is equally vital to recognise the
limits of online information. If something feels wrong, speak up, seek support,
and consult a professional. Choosing communication and expert guidance over
self-diagnosis helps build a healthier, more informed, and compassionate
society.
At Let’s Talk Mental Health Foundation, we believe
no one should suffer alone in silence. Our aim is to create a safe, supportive,
and compassionate community where people feel heard, understood, and connected.
