Ever wondered
why no Asian or African nation has ever won the FIFA World Cup. The first
FIFA World Cup took place in Uruguay in
1930. Uruguay won the first
World Cup by defeating Argentina 4-2.
Since the
tournament's inception, the title has been won exclusively by countries from
South America and Europe.
The furthest
any Asian team has ever reached in the tournament is the semi-finals. South
Korea secured a historic fourth-place finish in 2002 when they co-hosted the
tournament. North Korea reached the quarterfinals in 1966. India never played
the tournament though it qualified once in 1950.
Among the
African nations Morocco became the first African nation to reach the
semi-finals, in 2022 in Qatar.
Prior to Morocco, only two other African teams had advanced to the
quarter-finals: Cameroon in 1990 and Senegal in 2002.
The dominance
of countries from South America and Europe largely comes down to a few
structural and historical factors.
Countries from South America and Europe have established
football culture and infrastructure. The modern game of football (soccer)
was shaped and codified in the mid-19th century in England and was deeply
embedded in Europe and South America over a century ago. Countries in these
regions benefit from multi-generational football cultures, deeply rooted
grassroots support, and highly organized professional academies. The football
associations of most of the countries in Asia and Africa are run like small
clubs.
The world's top domestic leagues (such as the English Premier
League, La Liga, and Serie A) are based in Europe. African and Asian players
frequently relocate to these leagues to develop and compete against the best
players in the world, meaning the highest level of consistent weekly
competition remains heavily localized in Europe. Many of the top players of
Asia and particularly Africa play in European countries.
In modern sports, top-tier success requires massive financial
backing for scouting, coaching education, and state-of-the-art training
facilities. Many Asian and African football federations historically lack the
funding, and sometimes the structural organization, to build the sustainable,
long-term talent pipelines seen in powerhouse nations.
However, though no Asian or African nation has lifted the
trophy, both continents are narrowing the gap. Several teams have made historic
runs, and hopefully we’ll see one or two reaching the last four in this world
cup.
Petrichor
There is a distinct, refreshing earthy aroma as the first rain
hits the dry ground. In English it is called 'petrichor'.
It is created by a combination of plant oils and geosmin—a
chemical compound released by soil-dwelling bacteria when it rains.
Many poems have been written on this strong smell. There have
been references to it in many stories and novels.
The unique smell has been captured in a bottle for centuries in
Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, often celebrated as the "Perfume Capital of
India" or the Grasse of the East. Known as Mitti Attar (Earth's Perfume),
it is a completely natural fragrance created by steam-distilling sun-baked clay
or earth into a base of pure sandalwood oil.
Peace
According to the Global Peace Index 2026, the average level of
peacefulness deteriorated by 0.7 percent over the past year. This is the 12th
consecutive year that global peacefulness has deteriorated.
India currently ranks 127th out of 163 countries on the Global
Peace Index, showing little overall change in its peacefulness score. The
country sits in the medium-peace tier, facing challenges tied to
militarization, regional tensions, and societal conflicts.
Just to help see the situation in perspective, Pakistan is
ranked 152nd in the index and Bangladesh 123rd. Bhutan is at 16th position and
Sri Lanka 67th.
