GANGTOK, : Youth leaders, tourism experts
and delegates from across India and around the world will convene at Yangang
for the International Youth Conclave for Tourism Development, scheduled from
April 12 to 14. The conclave aims to discuss and explore the future of tourism
development in the region.
The central theme of the
conclave, “Celebrating Sikkim’s 50 Years of Statehood,” will provide an
in-depth look into the State’s tourism journey, its growth, challenges and
opportunities over the past five decades, informs a press release.
“The upcoming event will
spotlight emerging tourism destinations in Sikkim, with a particular focus on
Yangang. Its aim is to position these areas for future growth through targeted
tourism infrastructure projects supported by the Ministry of Tourism,” the
release states.
The conclave will feature a variety
of enriching activities including heritage walks, cultural rallies, panel
discussions, resource talks, interactive sessions and on-site talks by tourism
professionals. The delegates will also have the chance to visit local tourism
destinations, engage in cultural exchange programs and contribute to
discussions on developmental strategies that promote sustainable tourism while
preserving local culture and heritage.
Hosted by the Yangang Tourism
Development Committee (YTDC), the event is expected to generate key outcomes
focused on (a) beautifying tourism destinations without compromising
environmental integrity, (b) creating employment opportunities for local
communities through sustainable tourism practices, (c) positioning Sikkim as a
global tourism destination through strategic marketing and (d) ensuring safety
and security for tourists visiting the region.
Sikkim’s rich history of
cultural preservation and community development will also be highlighted during
the conclave, along with the remarkable strides made by the YTDC in promoting
sustainable tourism and local economic development, the release mentions.
Recent initiatives, including the operation of the Dhapper-Bhaleydhungaropeway,
development of a skywalk, and eco-tourism programs, have contributed
significantly to the region’s growing appeal as a tourism destination.
“At the Yangang Tourism
Development Committee, we are dedicated to fostering sustainable tourism
practices that honour Sikkim's unique cultural heritage while promoting
economic growth for our local communities. Through projects like the Dhapper to
Bhaleydhungaropeway, the development of the skywalk, and our eco-tourism
initiatives, we aim to create a tourism ecosystem that benefits both our
environment and the people of Sikkim. This conclave is a vital step toward
positioning Sikkim as a leading global tourism destination, and we look forward
to collaborating with stakeholders to unlock its full potential,” said area MLA
and Deputy Speaker Raj Kumari Thapa.
“Post-conclave, which will be
attended by 176 delegates from India and several other countries, insights
gathered from the discussions will be forwarded to the State Tourism department
and relevant authorities to begin implementation of developmental activities in
collaboration with the YTDC, district tourism offices, local communities, and
stakeholders. The long-term goals include enhancing tourism infrastructure,
improving the local economy, and positioning Yangang as a prominent tourism
destination on the global stage,” said Bikash Basnet, the chief coordinator of
YTDC.
