Sikkim University celebrates 11th foundation day

GANGTOK: Sikkim University celebrated its 11th foundation day at the auditorium of Sikkim Manipal University here at 5th Mile today.
Dr. Eklabya Sharma, deputy director general of International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Kathmandu, Nepal was the chief guest for the occasion. He delivered the keynote lecture on 'Climate Change in the Hindu Kush Himalaya: Developing Solution for Complex Challenges at the Intersection of Environment and Development’. He shared his experiences and urged the gathering to look into the intersection of environment and development with special references to the importance of mountain regions of the world. Highlighting the role of ICIMOD Himalayan University Consortium (HUC) to contribute to enhanced collaboration among the universities of the region and to promote centres of excellence on key topics relevant to the region, he mentioned the relationship between HUC and Sikkim University and the university participating in various workshops/projects initiated under HUC.
Sikkim University officiating vice chancellor Jyoti Prakash Tamang delivered the welcome address, where he highlighted the achievements of the Central university since its establishment in 2007. He congratulated the staff and students and expressed that since its establishment 11 years ago, the university has 32 academic departments, three centres and six schools with more than 2,500 students from all over India
“The main concern is the permanent campus which is creating problems for staffs and students. I have earlier raised the issue everywhere and on July 28 will further raise the issue in front of the Education minister,” he informed.
The officiating VC further informed that SU scholars have participated and published various projects funded by different agencies. He encouraged the faculty members to bring in more projects for the benefit of the students and their departments.
From the funds generated by the institute through these projects, this year awards were presented to the teaching faculty, non-teaching staffs and students and NSS volunteers for their overall performances. Awards were also presented to students based on their academic performances and overall involvement in extra-curricular activities.
Dr. Eklabya Sharma was also felicitated by the university.
During the occasion, the first university web page by the department of music was also launched by the hands of the chief guest, VC and registrar T.K. Kaul.
Addresses were also delivered by Sikkim University Teacher's Association (SUTA) vice president Santosh Kumar Rai, Sikkim University Non-Teaching Association (SUNTA) president Pradeep Kumar Tamang and Sikkim University Student's Association (SUSA) representative Sonam Bhutia. They highlighted the achievements of their associations.
The celebration also included cultural performances.
