GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling was conferred with the prestigious One World Grand Prix Award during the award function on Friday at Legau, Germany.
The award was presented to the Sikkim Chief Minister for his pioneering work to transform Sikkim into an Organic State, informs a State government press release. Dr. Gred Muller, the minister of Bavaria State and Rupenzel managing director Joseph Wilhelm jointly handed over the award.
According to the press release from the website of One World Award, the Grand Pix award along with the prize money was also shared by United World Colleges (UWC) from Freiburg, Germany and Pune, India for their social and sustainable educational programmes.
The award is presented by Rapunzel and IFOAM, the global umbrella organization of organic movements, for extraordinary merits in organic movement.
In his acceptance speech, the Sikkim Chief Minister spoke about the organic farming mission undertaken by his government in Sikkim.
“14 years ago, when we began the organic campaign in our Himalayan province of Sikkim in India, little did I know that years down the line, people and communities would be driving an organic revolution, in different parts of the globe. Today, I feel immensely honoured to be in your company, and to be in solidarity with you, in striving to make the world a better place through organic agriculture.”
After 12 years of consistent work, Chamling said Sikkim was declared as the first Organic State in the country by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 18, 2016.
“Our initiatives in Sikkim are led by the belief that clean air, water and appropriate climate are fundamental human rights, and ensuring these for the people is not a question of politics; it is a moral obligation. I also realize that governments alone cannot address this universal crisis. People, communities and governments must work together to overcome the dangers of a fast developing world.”
Chamling thanked the jury members for selecting him as one of the Grand Prix winners for the One World Award 2017.
“As a recipient of this award, I feel a deep sense of responsibility that comes with this recognition. I am immensely grateful and deeply encouraged by this honour to work even more in furthering our vision of a safe and healthy world.”
“Last but not the least, I want to thank the people of Sikkim, for taking on the challenge completely, and working tirelessly towards transforming our State into the first organic State in the world. This recognition is for you!” said Chamling.
Dr. Vandana Shiva, environmental activist and member of the selection jury, introduced the Sikkim Chief Minister before the audience.
The final decision to confer the Grand Prix award to Chamling was that he has been the only politician to have obtained the love and support of the people for five consecutive terms with his hard work showed sustainability, position and popularity making Sikkim fully organic unlike other politicians who had limped in the process, Dr. Shiva said.
She went on to praise the culture and people of Sikkim where nature and humans co-exist with the Mother Nature.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Agriculture minister Somnath Poudyal, secretary Khorlo Bhutia and other officials.
