Sikkim’s Santosh Trophy qualification at stake

Wed, Jan 31, 2018

GANGTOK: Sikkim’s chances of qualifying for Santosh Trophy are almost certainly over with defeat against Odisha today.
The Sikkim team must rely on the final qualifying match between Odisha and Bihar going their way if they are to qualify.  Only one from the three-team east-zone group will qualify so even second place may not be enough.
Sikkim won 3-0 against Bihar in their opening match but looks set to miss out on the major tournament with an upsetting 0-2 loss against Odisha at Begusarai, Bihar today. B. Parihary and Arjun Nayak scored in either halves to defeat 10-man Sikkim team.
With the loss, Sikkim have three points from two games, but the Odisha side, which also have 3 points, have a game in hand and are yet to concede a goal. It’s seemingly unlikely that Bihar will defeat the superior Odisha side in the last qualifying match on February 1.
The only way Sikkim can qualify is if Bihar defeats Odisha by a margin of not more than two goals which will give Sikkim a goal-difference superiority. Sikkim have scored three and conceded two in the qualifying round, while Bihar have conceded three and scored none in the only match that they have played so far.
Sikkim team looked poised to qualify after an impressive 3-0 win over Bihar last week, however today’s loss could mean the tiny State have to wait for another year.
