Sikkim’s Omi Gurung in global climate campaign

SE Report
GANGTOK: Sustainable fashion designer and social entrepreneur from Sikkim Omi Gurung will represent India as one of the 50 most powerful and inspiring voices of youth of South and South East Asia in a global campaign ‘My Future My Voice’ organised by Earth Day Network.
The global campaign is to mark 50th anniversary of Earth Day and will feature voices of 50 youths from around 15 countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. They are the voices of young and keen environmentalists pledging their #ActsOfGreen on this #EarthDay2020. All 50 commit to Climate Action, a release informs.
Earth Day Network, South and South East Asia regional director Karuna Singh said Earth Day Network is happy to bring together the voices of 50 youth from the region as youth are the torch-bearers for a climate safe, sustainable and environment-friendly future.
Omi is a well-known green warrior from the northeast region of India popular for his sustainable fashion and out of waste ideas. He was recently awarded Karamveer Chakra by United Nations and ICONGO (International confederation of NGOs).
Omi mentions that Earth Day matters now more than ever and it’s more important than ever to be green. “We all have seen how the world has changed during lockdown period. It’s high time to take climate action and we need to pay attention to our footprints and learn to adapt to a minimalist and earth friendly lifestyle. We need to be a conscious consumer,” he adds.
The theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action. The enormous challenge — but also the vast opportunities — of action on climate change have distinguished the issue as the most pressing topic for the 50th anniversary. The first Earth Day on 22 April 1970 was a unified response to an environment in crisis and is credited with launching the modern environmental movement, and is now recognized as the planet’s largest civic event.
