Don’t fight among each other, stay united in this difficult period: Edwards appeals to people of Sikkim

DARJEELING,: As protests over ‘foreigner’ issue rages in Sikkim, Hamro Party (HP) leader Ajoy Edwards on Tuesday appealed to the people of Sikkim not to fight amongst each other as, he said, it would not benefit anyone.

In a press statement, Edwards said: “At a time of difficulty like this, I appeal to the people of Sikkim not to fight amongst each other but to remain united.”

“We are proud that Sikkim has its own State but calling Sikkim Nepalis as foreigners is a sad thing. This has upset not only the people of Darjeeling but our community living everywhere in the country. And in such a situation seeing infighting between your own brothers and stone pelting in national media is very heart-breaking,” said Edwards.

Edwards recalled that a similar situation like that of Sikkim had been faced by the people in Darjeeling during the 1986 agitation wherein more than 1,200 people had become martyrs.

“I am your smaller brother and I request that my suggestions are thought upon carefully. There is no benefit to be gained from fighting each other. We have already taken the path that you are taking now but it did not benefit us but only brought us loss,” Edwards said adding that “power” was like a day of football match while an issue of the community is for their benefit.

Edwards maintained that presently the whole world is looking at Sikkim and what they are doing at this time of difficulty.

“Instead of fighting and blaming each other you all should work towards removing the accusations that have been put on our community. We love Sikkim and the people of Darjeeling will do whatever that is needed to do for its unity,” he said.
