Lab test to determine cause of death of fishes in Karthok Lake

YUKSAM, : Officials visited the popular Karthok Lake in Yuksam on Friday to examine the cause of death of fishes.
Local residents had spotted dead fishes floating on water recently and informed the sub-divisional officials about it. The residents suspected the sudden drop in temperature to be the cause for this.
While the officials have said, after the analysis of the lake water, that all parameters are within the permissible limit, except turbidity, they have suggested that the reason for the deaths of fishes could be due to the reduced oxygen level.
Yuksam SDM Tshering T. Bhutia said, “High turbidity cannot be a reason for cat fish to die. Since the water is stagnant there is no oxygenation. Hence it may be the problem of low oxygen level.”
It will be known only after the result of the bacteriological test arrives.
The SDM said, “Concerned department has been notified on regards to this and officials have been mobilised to oversee the causes and other factors. My office will follow-up on the matter until we get the outcome, consequences.”
The local people and local monks’ body have appealed people not to release fishes into the lake from now onwards. People release fishes into this lake in religious sentiment and on religious occasions.
