GANGTOK,: The construction of the permanent campus of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Sikkim at Khamdong in East Sikkim is progressing rapidly, with completion targeted by March 2027.
Work began in February 2025 on nearly 100 acres of land acquired by the Government of Sikkim near Dundung. The project is currently advancing on a war footing.
The National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) is serving as the Project Management Consultancy, overseeing major infrastructure development including the academic block, administrative building, laboratories, staff quarters, student hostels, central library, auditorium, and a sports complex.
NIT Sikkim, which presently operates from a rented campus in Rabongla in South Sikkim, is preparing to shift to this upcoming permanent site. The Ministry of Education has sanctioned Rs 500 crore for the project. With the shift to Khamdong, the student intake capacity is expected to rise from around 900 to 1,200, significantly expanding opportunities for technical education.
Sanctioned in 2010 along with nine other NITs, the institute’s permanent campus project faced long delays due to land-related challenges. Momentum increased following the initiative of the SKM government and the intervention of Khamdong–Singtam MLA and Roads & Bridges minister Nar Bahadur Dahal, who ensured timely land allocation.
A key milestone was marked on 4th November 2022, when the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, laid the foundation stone for the campus.
With the completion of the NIT permanent campus, Sikkim is expected to emerge as a major centre for technical education in the Northeast. The nearly completed Sikkim University campus at Yangang and the ongoing construction of Kanchandzonga State University at Timi Tarku, along with the upcoming NIT campus at Khamdong, will give Sikkim the rare advantage of hosting three significant higher educational institutions within close proximity, marking a major achievement for the State’s education sector.
