GANGTOK,: Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba on
September 30 met Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil and apprised him of the Government of
Sikkim’s proposal for comprehensive Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risk
reduction in the State.
A press
release informs that the Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim highlighted the urgent need
for proactive, science-based mitigation to protect lives, communities,
livelihoods and critical infrastructure in downstream areas, particularly in
light of the devastating South Lhonak GLOF of October 2023.
Indra Hang
requested the Union Minister to facilitate a formal technical partnership
between the Government of Sikkim and the Brahmaputra Board, as proposed by the
State Government, including the nomination of a multidisciplinary technical
team to undertake hydrological and technical studies, assess appropriate
structural and non-structural mitigation measures, and prepare implementable
DPRs.
The Government
of Sikkim has conveyed its readiness to provide necessary field and logistical
support.
Indra Hang
urged that the process be taken forward in a time-bound manner, stressing that
effective mitigation must precede any future disaster rather than remain
limited to post-disaster response.
The meeting
focused on securing concrete Central support for strengthening Sikkim’s
long-term GLOF preparedness and protecting communities and critical
infrastructure, the release mentions.
