Centre transfers Darjeeling-Siliguri national highway to NHIDCL

DARJEELING, : The Centre has ordered transfer of NH 110 (old NH 55), which connects Darjeeling with Siliguri via Kurseong, to National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL). The highway was being maintained by National Highway Division of the West Bengal PWD.

Thanking the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways for ordering the transfer, Darjeeling MP Raju Bista said, “The transfer of NH-55 to NHIDCL will ensure faster repair, regular maintenance, timely expansion, and systematic development of this vital highway. It will improve connectivity, enhance road safety, and boost economic activities in our region. Additionally, it will support tourism, and improve access to essential services for local communities. This critical lifeline for the people of our region will significantly benefit from NHIDCL's expertise and resources.”

Bista maintained that this was being done following his request on February 12 earlier this year when he had alleged that the NH Division of WB PWD had failed to maintain and upkeep the Highway, which was causing massive harassment to the locals, decrease in tourist inflow, reduction in trade and increase in traffic jam and pollution.

The notification issued by the centre on April 25 reads: “Central Government hereby directs that the National Highways& Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited shall exercise the function relating to the development and maintenance of the stretch NH110 starting from its junction with NH-10 near Siliguri connecting Kurseong and terminating at Darjeeling in the State of West Bengal.
