GDKA to host international karate championship at Hee Bazaar

GANGTOK,: The Gyalshing District Karate Association (GDKA) is organising the 1st Khangchendzonga International Karate Championship at Hee Bazaar public ground, West Sikkim on December 17 and 18.

Speaking to media here on Friday, GDKA publicity secretary Mahesh Bista shared details about the upcoming championship being held under the patronage of Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba.

Around 400 karatekas from Sikkim, West Bengal and Northeastern States along with invited players from neighbouring Nepal are expected to take part in the two-day championship.  About 150 players from Sikkim are to feature in the event which has 68 categories.

The event is being supported by Sikkim Olympic Association with technical support coming from Sikkim State Karate Do Association.

The State government has been supporting and encouraging sports, and we are looking forward to a similar support for our championship, said Bista. He informed that registration of the players will be held till December 10.

Chief Minister PS Golay has accepted our invitation to attend the final day event on December 18, said the GDKA publicity secretary.

The organisers said the international karate championship being held in a rural place like Hee Bazaar would give multiple benefits. Talents are abundantly found in villages and through this championship, we aim to give an exposure to our talents and want them to gain valuable experience by playing against other experienced karatekas of other regions, he said.

Arrangements are being made to accommodate the participants and officials in the villages surrounding the venue. This will also yield benefits for the villagers and help to promote sports tourism in our area, said Bista.
