Protest rally held over attack on youth leader in Darjeeling

DARJEELING, : A rally was taken out today by various social organizations in Darjeeling, demanding justice for the recent attack on Sudan Gurung. They also warned that a strike would be called if no action was taken within 24 hours.

Sudan Gurung, president of Trained Unemployed Youth Welfare Organization, was assaulted late in the evening on May 8 and sustained head injuries. He is currently undergoing treatment at Darjeeling District Hospital.

Dipika Gurung, a social activist who participated in the rally, stated, "We took out the rally to demand the immediate arrest of those responsible for the attack. Sudan was fighting for everyone's rights, and this assault amounts to an attempt to murder."

Sudan Gurung has been actively raising his voice against the alleged Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) teacher recruitment scam. He has claimed that the attack on him was directly linked to his activism. The matter is currently under consideration in the High Court.

“We also spoke to the police and submitted our demands. They have requested 24 hours to take action. According to them, the incident took place in the dark, and the CCTV footage does not clearly capture the assault,” Dipika Gurung added.

She further mentioned that their organization was contemplating a strike if their demands were not met, but a final decision would be taken following an internal meeting.

The rally commenced from Darjeeling Railway Station and after passing through Chowrasta concluded at Darjeeling Sadar Police Station.
