Sikkim finishes with 50 medals in NE Olympic Games

GANGTOK,: Sikkim won 50 medals including three gold in the 2nd North East Olympic Games held at Shillong from November10 to 16.

Sikkim reached finals of 19 sporting events winning gold in basketball, boxing and karate. Sikkim bagged 16 silver and 31 won bronze medals.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who was the chief guest of the women’s basketball final played between Sikkim and Meghalaya, was all praise for the Sikkim team.

Sikkim, which won a respectable five silver medals and one bronze medal in athletics, won most medals in taekwondo – four silver and 10 bronze.

Sikkim had sent a contingent of 230 athletes and officials.

The Sikkim Olympic Association (SOA) has extended heartiest congratulations to all athletes and coaches for participation and winning medals for the State. The SOA also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister P.S. Golay for all support and encouragement. The Chief Minister had also contacted the Chief Minister of Meghalaya and enquired about athletes from Sikkim, and interacted with the athletes.

Ministers Sanjit Kharel and Bhim Hang Limboo attended the opening ceremony and met the athletes of the State.

Nagaland will host the next edition of the North East Olympic Games, a press release informs.
