Three Sikkim cricketers in North East squad for inter-zonal women’s One-Day tourney

GANGTOK,: Sikkim cricketers Leezamit Lepcha, Yudenmit Lepcha and Pranita Chettri have been selected for North East Zone that will be making its maiden appearance in Inter-Zonal Women’s One-Day Trophy scheduled to start on February 12.

Another Sikkim player, Tshering Ongmu Lepcha, has been named as one of the standby players.

They are key players in Sikkim women’s team, and were selected in the North East Zone team on the basis of their performance this season.

The players for the North East team were selected in a meeting of selectors and office bearers of North East cricket bodies in Guwahati on February 3. The meeting had the presence of BCCI Apex Council member Mamon Majumdar and Zonal convener Nabam Vivek.

President Tika Subba, secretary Rinzing Namgyal Bhutia and selector Karma Thendup represented Sikkim Cricket Association at the meeting.

Nagaland cricketer Limatola Ao will lead the North East Zone team and Nabam Yapu has been named her deputy.

Likewise, Sheril Lepcha will be the physio of the side. Sheryl is the phyiso of Sikkim women’s team.

The North East Zone will play two matches in the league stage of the tournament, first against East Zone on February 12 and against North Zone on February 13. Both matches will be held at Hyderabad.

North East Zone, a combined team of players from the North East States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim, is featuring in the women’s zonal tournaments for the first time this season. While the inter-zonal women’s T20 tournament was held in November last year, the One-Day tournament will start on February 12 and conclude on February 21.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) allowed the North East to participate in the zonal tournaments for the first time this season.

The men’s zonal tournament, Duleep Trophy, held at the start of the season had two players from Sikkim – wicket keeper batsman Ashish Thapa and all-rounder Ankur Malik.
