GANGTOK,: In a landmark achievement, the Cardiology Department recently successfully
performed the first Carotid Artery Angioplasty and Stenting to treat a patient
suffering from acute brain stroke at STNM Hospital here.
The successful
neurovascular intervention was conducted by a team led by Interventional
Cardiologist Dr. DP Rai, the head of Cardiology Department, for the patient
with a massive acute stroke, complete carotid artery occlusion, coma and
paralysis.
With timely
intervention and dedicated teamwork, the patient achieved complete recovery of
brain functions, including recovery from coma and paralysis, it was informed.
“This is more
than a medical milestone. It is a new hope for patients suffering from severe
strokes and a significant advancement in advanced neurovascular care in Sikkim,”
said Dr. Rai.
Dr. Rai
extended the department’s sincere gratitude to the Government of Sikkim,
hospital administration and every member of the medical, nursing, technical and
support teams who contribute towards bringing advanced and life-saving
healthcare closer to the people.
Dr. Rai shared
the need to recognize the warning signs of stroke which includes loss of
balance, sudden loss or blurring of vision, facial dropping, sudden weakness or
paralysis of an arm and difficulty in speaking. He highlighted that early
detection and timely treatment generates better chances of recovery.
“Every minute
matters during a stroke. Never ignore sudden neurological symptoms or wait for
them to resolve on their own,” said Dr. Rai.
