Launch of Apex Superspeciality Cancer Hospital in Mumbai a welcome development for Sikkim

GANGTOK,: The launch of Apex Superspeciality Cancer Hospital in Chembur, Mumbai, on November 1 marks a welcome development for cancer patients from Sikkim seeking specialised treatment outside the State. Founded by renowned surgical oncologist Dr. Amit Gupta, the hospital brings together advanced surgical oncology, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, diagnostics and rehabilitation under one roof.

Dr. Gupta shares a close association with Sikkim, having visited the State in November 2025 to conduct a two-day oncology consultation camp at STNM Hospital, Gangtok, where he provided expert consultations to nearly 40 cancer patients. His familiarity with Sikkim and its healthcare needs lends particular significance to the new institution, which could provide an additional avenue for specialised cancer treatment for patients from the State.

With over 16 years of experience, including extensive training at the prestigious Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, Dr. Gupta has earned several distinctions for his contributions to surgical oncology. These include the Maharashtra Ratna Award in 2022, Best Cancer Specialist in Maharashtra recognition in 2023 and Outlook Best Doctor Mumbai honour in 2026.

The development comes at a time when cancer care in Sikkim has received a tremendous fillip under the leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay. The State Government has placed considerable emphasis on strengthening cancer treatment facilities, expanding financial assistance to patients requiring specialised care and improving access to critical medical services. These initiatives reflect the government's continuing commitment to making quality healthcare more accessible to the people of Sikkim.

While the State continues to strengthen its own medical infrastructure, access to specialised institutions elsewhere in the country remains important, particularly for patients requiring complex oncological procedures and multidisciplinary care.

Against this backdrop, the establishment of Apex Superspeciality Cancer Hospital, coupled with Dr. Gupta's existing association with Sikkim, holds particular promise. It represents another opportunity to strengthen the continuum of cancer care available to patients from the State, complementing the significant strides being made in healthcare under the State Government's ongoing initiatives.
