GANGTOK,: Gangtok district collector Agawane Rohan Ramesh on Saturday visited three Gram Panchayat Units (GPUs) under Martam Block to assess the condition of public infrastructure and review issues arising due to the ongoing monsoon season.
As part of the district administration’s weekly GPU inspection programme, Ramesh visited Martam Nazitam, Namli and Byeng Phegyong GPUs, accompanied by District Disaster Management Authority joint director Sonam Wongyal Lepcha, Martam BDO Sonam Palden Bhutia, panchayat members, revenue surveyor and district management staff, informs a press release.
The team inspected the Namli ICDS Centre, Lower Namli ICDS Centre, Rabdang ICDS Centre, 32 No. ICDS Centre, Sangkhola Primary School and Sangkhola ICDS Centre, focusing on the assessing the condition of the facilities and identifying infrastructure and safety concerns requiring timely intervention, the DAC said.
Roof leakages, damaged plywood ceilings and structural cracks were observed at several ICDS centres during the inspection. “Some of the centres were also found to be without electricity connections, leading to increased humidity and discomfort for children and Anganwadi workers, particularly during the monsoon.”
The district collector interacted with local representatives, panchayat members and other stakeholders to understand the issues being faced at the ground level and personally inspected the affected facilities to assess their requirements.
Ramesh expressed concern over the condition of facilities serving children and the local community and stressed the need for timely repairs, restoration and appropriate safety measures.
He assured stakeholders of necessary support and coordination from the district administration and directed officials to follow up on the identified issues with the concerned authorities for appropriate action.
The weekly GPU inspections are aimed at strengthening grassroots-level monitoring, responsive governance and coordination with local communities, with emphasis on the safety, functionality and timely maintenance of public infrastructure and essential services, the release mentions.
