DARJEELING,: Independent candidate SumendraTamang today announced his decision to
contest the upcoming VidhanSabha elections from the Kurseong constituency.
A
resident of BarbungBasti at Ghayabari in Kurseong, Tamang said he aims to
represent the interests of labourers in the Hills. Over the years, he and his
team have been actively addressing issues faced by tea garden and Cinchona
plantation workers.
Speaking
at a press conference in Kurseong, Tanuja Lama, a representative of
ShramjiviPahal (Workers’ Initiative), said, “He will contest the elections as
an independent candidate as part of the workers’ initiative.”
Workers
from various gardens attended the conference to show their support. Many
expressed dissatisfaction with previous elected representatives, saying they
had failed to deliver for the working community. They said this time, they had
prepared their own candidate to ensure workers’ interests are represented.
Another
supporter, ChewangYonjan, added, “This is not a sudden move. We have been
working across Darjeeling and Kalimpong for the past 10–12 years on issues
concerning the working class. Supporting an independent candidate is a
long-term ideological initiative.”
Speaking
on his candidature, Tamang said he is offering an alternative for the people in
this election. He also reiterated his campaign slogan: “No vote for the BJP and
the TMC.”
