‘Hamro Gauley Bazaar’ to be inaugurated at Resithang on Sunday

GANGTOK,  (IPR): A farmer-led marketplace, “Hamro Gaunle Bazaar”, developed at Resithang under the initiative of MLA, Upper Burtuk Constituency, Kala Rai, is set to be inaugurated on February 8, 2026. With construction nearing completion, the bazaar reflects an innovative and community-driven concept aimed at strengthening farmers’ livelihoods while promoting local creativity and enterprise.

Envisioned as a dedicated platform for grassroots producers, the marketplace will enable more than one hundred farmers to directly sell their agricultural produce. By positioning farmers at the centre of the market value chain from production and presentation to pricing and sale, the initiative reduces dependence on intermediaries and encourages direct engagement with consumers. The bazaar will feature fresh crops, vegetables, and traditional and ethnic food items prepared by farmers, showcasing local knowledge and skills.

Designed to promote local products and nurture rural entrepreneurship, the marketplace is expected to contribute to strengthening the local economy. Beyond commercial activity, it provides a space for celebrating and preserving the cultural richness of Sikkim by encouraging the display of diverse traditions, cuisines and community practices.

The construction of the bazaar reflects collective cooperation and community participation. Developed through voluntary effort and without reliance on government budgetary support, the initiative demonstrates the spirit of labour contribution and local ownership. This approach highlights how community initiative can create infrastructure that empowers producers and strengthens resilience.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA, Upper Burtuk Constituency, Kala Rai expressed confidence that empowering farmers within the marketing ecosystem would improve accessibility and visibility for local produce. She stated that the initiative would promote economic progress among farming communities and support the State government’s vision of building a prosperous, self-reliant and capable Sikkim.
