GANGTOK,: Minister of State (MoS) for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta
undertook a two-day tour of Sikkim, travelling along NH-10 and NH-510 to review
the progress of various infrastructure and development initiatives being
implemented in the State.
During
his visit to Gyalshing district, the MoS inspected several ongoing projects and
key public infrastructure facilities, including the Ayush Hospital and Krishi
Vigyan Kendra. He also reviewed the implementation of various Central
Government flagship schemes and assessed the progress of road and highway
development projects in the district, a MoRTH press release informed.
Tamta
reviewed the status of several important highway development projects planned
for the State.
These
include the Rhenock-Rongli Road Project, for which in-principle approval has
been accorded for the development of a 15.30-km stretch at an estimated total
project cost (TPC) of Rs 595 crore, and NH-10 improvement works involving the
development and upgradation of a 25.75-km stretch at an estimated TPC of Rs
1,018 crore.
The
MoS also reviewed the proposed Rangpo-Rorathang and Melli-Singtam bypass
projects, aimed at easing traffic congestion, enhancing road safety, and
improving connectivity along key corridors.
According
to the Ministry, Tamta directed officials to expedite the completion of ongoing
and upcoming projects.
The
achievements of NHIDCL in Sikkim were also highlighted. The agency has
successfully completed six projects in the State, covering a total length of 58
km, with a cumulative investment of approximately Rs 1,323 crore.
In
addition, seven NHIDCL projects are currently under various stages of
implementation, covering a total length of 147 km with a combined TPC of Rs
3,749 crore.
The
Ministry, through its Roads and National Highways Wing, has also made
significant contributions towards strengthening road connectivity in Sikkim. It
was informed that road projects covering 117 km have been completed at a total
investment of Rs 1,202 crore. Ongoing construction works span 50 km with a TPC
of Rs 439 crore, while upcoming projects cover 58 km at an estimated cost of Rs
2,575 crore.
The
MoS also reviewed the progress of the Gangtok Bypass project and directed
officials to complete it by November 2026.
In
addition, 17 National Highway projects are currently under various stages of
implementation across NH-310 and NH-310A in Sikkim, covering a total length of
241 km and being executed by the BRO.
On
Friday evening, the MoS chaired a review meeting in Gangtok on the ongoing road
infrastructure projects being undertaken by the Ministry of Road Transport and
Highways, NHIDCL, BRO and the State Public Works Department (PWD).
The
meeting focused on reviewing and monitoring the progress of various
infrastructure projects being implemented by the Government of India in the
State, an IPR release stated.
Addressing
the gathering, Tamta highlighted several road connectivity projects planned for
the region and reviewed the progress achieved so far in improving road
infrastructure. He also discussed the State's future road development roadmap
and underscored the Central Government's commitment to strengthening
connectivity across Sikkim.
Emphasising
the strategic importance of seamless transportation networks, he said sustained
efforts were being made to improve road conditions and ensure uninterrupted
connectivity between the State and the national highway network.
The
MoS further reviewed the status of key road projects and discussed measures to
expedite their implementation. He stressed the importance of timely completion
of infrastructure works to facilitate better connectivity, enhance mobility and
support the socio-economic development of the State.
Among
those present at the meeting were State Roads & Bridges Minister N.B.
Dahal, PWD Secretary A.B. Subba, NHIDCL Gangtok Regional Office Executive
Director (Projects) Ashok Kumar Saha, representatives of the BRO and other
dignitaries.
