GANGTOK,: A
delegation of the newly-elected executive committee of Press Club of Sikkim
(PCS), led by its president Samir Hang Limboo, called on Governor Om Prakash
Mathur at Lok Bhavan here on Saturday.
During
the courtesy meeting, Limboo introduced the newly elected office-bearers to the
Governor and briefed him about the activities and functioning of the Press Club
of Sikkim, informs a Lok Bhavan release.
Congratulating
new president Limboo and other executive members, the Governor urged
journalists to project Sikkim’s unique identity and other developments in
national media. He stressed the need for wider media coverage of Sikkim's rich
flora and fauna, natural beauty and cultural heritage.
The Governor
also stressed the importance of upholding the core values of journalism amid
the rapidly changing media landscape.
Referring
to the 1967 Indo-China clashes at Nathu La and Cho La, Mathur said, “Many
people of our country are still unaware of Sikkim’s rich military history and
other various facts where India won the war against China under the heroic
leadership of Major General Sagat Singh. Such Shaurya Gatha of the armed forces
must be highlighted in the media to inspire the youth and foster a strong sense
of nationalism.”
Emphasising
the role of the media in society, the Governor said journalists should focus on
grassroots reporting by highlighting issues, achievements and developmental
initiatives.
The
Governor spoke about the digital age of journalism and stated that a revolution
has taken place that has reshaped the 'Patrakarita'. He mentioned that the
internet has now become a catalyst for change, offering journalists boundless
opportunities to disseminate stories and other news across platforms in real
time. He asked journalists to utilize
digital platforms responsibly for wider media coverage of the State.
During
the meeting, Limboo, on behalf of PCS, extended a formal invitation to the Governor
to attend the 24th Foundation Day celebrations of the Press Club of Sikkim,
scheduled to be held on July 17.
