GANGTOK,: In a spirited and forward-looking meeting held on Tuesday, the Student
Welfare Board, Government of Sikkim advanced preparations for the upcoming
Sikkim Arts and Literature Festival 2026 (SALF 2026), setting the stage for
what promises to be a landmark cultural celebration for the State.
The
meeting was addressed by Sonam Chopel Sherpa, chairperson of the Student
Welfare Board, and facilitated by Kunzang Choeki, Member of the Board. It was
held in the presence of Tashi Chopphel Lepcha, secretary (School Education)
Education department; Bhim Kumari Sharma, chairperson, Culture department;
Tshering Wangchuk Lepcha, Additional Political Secretary; Sanjay Dilpali Rai, chairperson,
Art, Culture and Heritage Board; Yougan Tamang, press secretary to CM; Rewaj
Chettri, OSD to CM; and Savitri Mukhia, member of the Student Welfare Board.
With
a shared vision and strong collaborative spirit, the team aligned SALF 2026
around the inspiring themes of Knowledge Tourism, Literature Tourism, and
Creative Tourism, positioning Gangtok as a vibrant destination for ideas, stories,
and cultural exchange, a press release informs.
What
sets SALF 2026 apart is its unique “Circle Model” of governance, wherein
dedicated circles- including Programme and Curation, Operations and Logistics,
Funding and Partnerships, Marketing and Community Activation, and Cultural
Integration-work collaboratively rather than hierarchically. This structure
ensures collective ownership, shared responsibility, and cross-learning at
every stage of planning and execution.
The
festival is being designed not merely as a series of events, but as a
comprehensive learning journey for everyone involved, including organisers,
students, artists, volunteers, and audiences. Twenty authors have already been
confirmed, with several more under discussion. The festival will feature
inclusive programming, including Nepali-language sessions and active
participation from schools and universities. A distinctive initiative will
enable local students to serve as guides to visiting authors, fostering
mentorship, exposure, and experiential growth, the release mentions.
Local
writers, artists, and performers will be seamlessly integrated into the
festival framework, ensuring that Sikkim’s own creative voices remain at its
core. Structured operational planning and coordinated cultural efforts are
underway to deliver a dynamic and meaningful experience.
SALF
2026 is envisioned not merely as a festival, but as a movement- a celebration
of Sikkim’s intellectual vitality, artistic heritage, and youthful energy. It
carries the promise of bringing communities together, amplifying local talent,
and placing Sikkim firmly on the national cultural map, the release mentions.
