Sikkim’s ‘Numahangma’ selected for Nepal Indigenous Film Festival 2026 in the UK

GANGTOK,: Sikkim-made feature film ‘Numahangma’ directed by filmmaker Niyara Subba and produced by H.M. Subba has achieved another significant milestone after being selected for the second Nepal Indigenous Film Festival (NIFF) 2026 scheduled to be held in London, United Kingdom.

The 90-minute feature film is based on the real-life journey and experiences of producer H.M. Subba portraying the struggles, challenges and perseverance of a woman as she navigates family responsibilities and works her way towards success. By drawing from her lived experiences, the film presents a deeply personal yet relatable story of resilience, determination and self-discovery.

‘Numahangma’ brings H.M. Subba’s life journey to the screen through a cinematic narrative rooted in human experience, culture and identity. The film has been appreciated for portraying the realities and struggles of women with sensitivity while also reflecting the social and cultural environment from which the story emerges.

The film premiered at Vajra Cinema Hall in Gangtok and has since embarked on a journey through various film festivals. Its selection for NIFF 2026 marks another important achievement for Sikkim’s emerging film industry, providing an opportunity for a Sikkim-made production to reach an international audience.

‘Numahangma’ will be screened in London on September 27, alongside eight other indigenous films selected for the festival. The screening is expected to provide international audiences with an opportunity to experience a story originating from Sikkim and shaped by the lived experiences of its people.

Expressing her happiness over the selection, director Niyara Subba described the opportunity to represent Sikkim on an international platform as a proud and significant moment. She acknowledged the contribution of producer H.M. Subba, whose life experiences and support formed an important foundation for the film.

Niyara Subba also expressed gratitude to the entire team of ‘Numahangma’, recognising their collective effort and contribution in bringing the story to life. She said that the journey of Sikkimese cinema to an international platform was a significant achievement that had given her a greater sense of responsibility and renewed energy to continue working in cinema.

The film has already added another major honour to its journey. At the second Yakthung Cine Awards International (YCAI) 2082 held in Nepal and organised by the Yakthung Chalchitra Karmey Sang ‘Numahangma’ won both Best Director and Best Film with Niyara Subba receiving the Best Director award.

Rooted in Yakthung identity, landscape and lived experiences, the film was recognised for its sensitive direction, strong cultural grounding and distinctive cinematic language. Its success has been regarded as an important milestone for Yakthung and indigenous cinema highlighting the growing recognition of authentic, community-driven stories.

With its selection for NIFF 2026 in the UK ‘Numahangma’ continues its journey beyond regional and national platforms, carrying the story of H.M. Subba, the voice of Sikkimese cinema and indigenous storytelling to an international audience.
