Silnon project signals new phase in Sikkim’s eco-tourism push

GANGTOK,: A major eco-tourism project at Silnon, near Tashiding in Gyalshing district, has been set in motion with a sanctioned outlay of Rs 4,938 lakhs, marking a significant step in Sikkims ongoing effort to align development with sustainability and cultural preservation.

Located about 15 km from Yuksom–Sikkim’s historic first capital - the Silnon site is anchored by a monastery established in 1716, long regarded as a place of spiritual importance. The new initiative seeks to position the area within a broader eco-tourism circuit while retaining its cultural and environmental character.

At the centre of the project will be a 48-feet statue of Green Tara Devi, designed in copper casting, accompanied by a symbolic layout representing the 21 forms of Tara - with a central figure flanked by ten on either side.

In addition to the central installation, the project includes a multi-purpose RCC structure with prayer facilities, classrooms, a library, and exhibition space. A second block will provide accommodation and essential amenities, covering approximately 1347 square meters.

Officials indicate that the development will be carried out in phases, with an emphasis on eco-sensitive planning, including land shaping, landscaping, pedestrian pathways, and restoration of existing structures using traditional elements such as carving and laripa painting, alongside modern utilities like electrification and illumination.

Work orders for the project were issued on March 24, 2026, and preliminary work has begun.

The initiative is expected to strengthen tourism activity in the Yuksom–Tashiding corridor while generating local economic opportunities. At the same time, its long-term impact will depend on how effectively development is balanced with ecological and cultural considerations.

There are indications that the foundation-laying ceremony may be conducted virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, though official confirmation is awaited.
