Temi Tea Estate starts plucking first flush, looks towards new season with optimism

GANGTOK,: The plucking of first flush tea leaves at Temi Tea Estate started today after four-month dormancy.

Leaves plucked during the first flush are the youngest and the tenderest part of the tea plant and are said to yield the purest and freshest cup of tea that the plant is capable of producing.

The first flush from March to April is the first plucking after the dormant winter months. The leaves are tender and light green. The liquor is light, clear and bright with a pleasant and brisk flavour.

There are four harvest periods for tea in the country — first flush, second flush, rain flush and autumn flush.

The first flush of Temi tea is sought after by tea connoisseurs of the world for its exquisite flavor, unique taste and orange flowery liquor, Temi Tea managing director M. Ravikumar said in a press release.

Temi Tea Estate is popular for the production of premium orthodox black tea in India and abroad, especially in Germany, the UK, the USA, Canada, France, Japan, China and Thailand.

Likewise, Temi Tea has obtained GI Tag from National Biodiversity Authority of India which will ensure authenticity of Temi Tea and boost Temi Tea marketing, the MD added.

The production of Temi Tea was affected for the last two years due to Covid-19 and the Temi Tea management are expecting normal production season in the 2022-23 financial year with the minimum production target of 90,000 kg.

The management added they will take maximum efforts to enhance the export of Temi Tea.
