DARJEELING, : Traffic movement on NH 10, the
main route connecting Sikkim and Kalimpong to the plains, was closed for traffic on
Thrusday and will remain closed on May 17 and 19 as well.
The closure comes after a National
Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) order. The
NHIDCL, which looks after NH 10, said the closure is for ongoing maintenance
and rehabilitation work in different parts of the 52-km highway stretch. Traffic
movement is being restricted in the Highway from 9 am to 6 pm.
The order states that the NH 10
was being closed due to anticipated congestion and safety considerations of
vehicles plying on the particular section of the NH on account of ongoing emergent
works.
It maintains that on May 15, 17
and 19, the highway will be closed for all classes of vehicles.
It further adds that on May 16
and 18, the NH section would remain open for all traffic except commercial
vehicles with laden weight exceeding 10MT laden weight.
The NHIDCL attended that the
movement of all heavy vehicles (goods) shall be invariably prohibited only from
9 am to 6 pm on the NH-10 section and that the internal movement of NHIDCL,
IRCON and NHPC vehicles working on Sevoke-Rangpo section shall be allowed only
in-between the work locations.
Small vehicles for these three
days in which the highway will remain closed has been diverted via Peshok while
heavy vehicles are plying from Lava.
