GANGTOK, (IPR):
Following the Statehood Day Function at Manan Kendra, the Vice President of
India, C.P. Radhakrishnan, visited Orchidarium at Swarna Jayanti MaitreyaManjari
Complex, Ridge Park, today.
The
state-of-the-art orchidarium stands as a testament to Sikkim’s rich floral
biodiversity and the State’s commitment towards sustainable eco-tourism and
conservation.
During
the visit, the Vice President was given a comprehensive tour of the
orchidarium, beginning with an overview of its unique features and immersive
orchid experience. The tour also highlighted the diverse uses of orchids and
traditional methods adopted for their safe transportation and preservation.
Notably,
the Vice President viewed ‘Cymbidium Namo’, an orchid species named in honour
of the Prime Minister of India. He concluded the visit by signing the visitors’
book.
The
Vice President was accompanied by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Chief
Minister’s spouse Krishna Kumari Rai, Chief Secretary R. Telang, Urban
Development commissioner-cum-secretary, Jitendra Singh Raje, Gangtok DC Agawane
Rohan Ramesh and officials.
The
Vice President also visited Namgyal Institute of
Tibetology (NIT) at Deorali today as part of his post-Statehood Day celebration
engagements in Gangtok.
The
Vice President was received by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, in the
presence of Krishna Kumari Rai, NIT directorDr.Passang D Phempu, and other
officials and staff of NIT.
During
the visit, the vice president toured the museum and appreciated its rich
collection showcasing Tibetan iconography, religious artefacts, and Buddhist
heritage.
He
also visited the institute’s library and expressed admiration for the
institution’s scholarly contributions, describing NIT as a significant
repository of knowledge and culture.
