Dr.K.K.PANDEY Senior Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals New Delhi

It's a common problem in our country that your legs and feet suddenly become red or develop red rashes. Within three or four days, the legs become completely red, accompanied by swelling and pain. If more days pass and proper treatment is neglected, the redness and swelling can lead to the formation of small and large blisters. If this neglect continues, the blisters on leg can burst in multiple places, oozing yellowish fluid. This negligence can lead to serious damage to the legs and feet. Therefore, it's important for you and your family to understand the causes of this problem and learn about the proper treatment.

Who arecommonly suffering from this problem?

Redness in the legs and feet is medically known as "cellulitis." This problem is more common in people who everyday spend hours sitting in their shops or other establishments. Nowadays, people working in corporate offices and call centresfor years also suffer from redness or rashes in their legs and feet. Even those who gain excessive weight are not spared from the problem of sudden redness in their legs. Those even in young age who do not regularly walk at least five to six kilometres a day are also not immune to the problem of sudden redness in their legs. Redness in the legs is also common among diabetic patients.

What are the causes of sudden redness in the legs?

The most common cause is leg vein disease. Amongvein diseases of legs , the first is CVI (chronic venous insufficiency). The second is blockage or constriction in the leg veins. Both types of leg vein disease cause persistent swelling in the legs and feet. If not treated in time, the swelling in the legs becomes larger and larger, and red rashes appear in the end. In this condition if a nail or a thorn pricks your swollen foot or leg, the skin of the leg turns red rapidly. Sometimes, repeated scratching in a swollen leg exacerbates redness.

Diabetes and obesity also play a significant role

The second major cause is diabetes. Even a minor injury to the foot or leg, or a thorn prick, or a minor cut or burn, increases the likelihood of the leg turning red and swollen. A black crust or a pustule persisting for a few days on the leg may lead to redness of leg.

The third major cause is obesity. Due to excess fat in the leg, even a minor injury or scratch increases the risk of infection and rapid spread. The leg turns red very quickly.

What to do if your leg suddenly turns red?

If your leg is red and swollen, don't sit idle. Consult an experienced vascular surgeon immediately. If you delay, blisters may also appear along with the red swelling. And if this negligence continues, pus will begin to accumulate in the leg along with redness and swelling, leading to a serious condition.

Get Necessary Tests Done

If there is redness and swelling in the leg, arterial Doppler and venous Doppler tests of both the legs are essential. If necessary, an MRI of the leg is also required. Sometimes, angiography of the leg also become necessary. In addition, some special blood tests are required.

Treatment Methods

your vascular surgeon will determine the treatment plan after examining the leg. The first step is to reduce the infection and swelling in the leg. It is crucial to administer antibiotics through a vein [intravenous] to prevent the formation of pus. Special dressings are required. After the redness in the leg subsides, it is crucial to treat the underlying cause. In most cases, the veins in the leg need to be treated, with the use of laser or RFA techniques being the most common. In some cases, angioplasty of the leg veins may also be required. In a diabetic, an angioplasty and stenting may require.

How to avoid redness and swelling in the legs

First, control your weight and try to achieve the desired weight according to your height. Walk five to six kilometres regularly every day. Never sit or stand for more than an hour at a stretch. Always take a five-minute break after every hour and take a walk during that time. Do leg exercises that require lifting of legs. Keep diabetes under control.
