GANGTOK,: The Government of India has notified issuance of a special coin of Rs. 50 denomination to commemorate the 50 years of Sikkim as a State of the Indian Union. Sikkim celebrated its 50th Statehood Day on May 16 this year.

The pure silver coin would have ’50 Glorious Years of Statehood-Sikkim’ inscribed on its one side in both Devnagari and English, as per a Finance Ministry notification issued on May 13. The year ‘1975-2025’ is to be written below the logo of 50 years celebration of Sikkim State in the special coin to mark the 50-year Statehood period.

The Rs. 50 commemorative coin is to be coined at the mint for issue under the authority of the Central government on the occasion of ’50 Glorious Years of Statehood-Sikkim’, as per the notification.

As per reports, this is a non-circulating commemorative coin and will not be issued for general use in the market.

Though Sikkim celebrated its Statehood Golden Jubilee in a grand manner on May 16, elaborate preparations are being made by the State government to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the main celebrations later this month.

A series of major events are planned during the Prime Minister’s visit including inauguration of key projects like the new 500-bedded Namchi District Hospital and laying of foundation stones for transformative projects including the Golden Jubilee Convention Centre at Namli.

Meanwhile, the Sikkim BJP unit has extended its deepest gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Government of India for the issuance of a special Rs. 50 commemorative silver coin to mark the 50 glorious years of Sikkims integration with the Indian Union (19752025).

“This historic gesture is not merely a symbolic act but a powerful affirmation of Sikkim’s unique cultural identity, national integration, and its proud journey as an integral part of India. Commemorative coins such as this play a vital role in preserving our shared history and culture, serving as timeless reminders of significant milestones in the nation’s collective consciousness,” said State BJP media in-charge Niren Bhandari.

Bhandari added that these coins become cherished collectors’ items, offering numismatists and citizens alike the opportunity to hold in their hands a piece of history that celebrates the resilience, contribution, and aspirations of the Sikkimese people. Such initiatives also promote awareness about Sikkim’s rich traditions and legacy, acting as a beacon to encourage tourism and cultural interest in the region, he said.

“Moreover, the issuance of the coin will aid in revenue generation through its collectible value, contributing to the economic and cultural vibrancy of our nation. Above all, it evokes a deep sense of connection and pride in every Indian, especially the people of Sikkim, as we commemorate five decades of unity, progress, and shared purpose”

“Once again, BJP Sikkim expresses sincere thanks to Prime Minister Modi for honouring Sikkim’s legacy with this enduring tribute,” said the State BJP.
