GANGTOK, : The Butterfly Society of Sikkim–TPCF is organising a Butterthon from
May 1 to 16 to commemorate 50 remarkable years of Sikkim’s Statehood.
Butterthon is a race of watching butterflies which is happening for the first
time in Sikkim.
The
first ever Butterthon in Sikkim was joined by Dr. Peter Lobo, a renowned
ornithologist of India, Joseph Coleman Thompson Jr. from the United States of
America, and Indika Upul Jayatissa from Sri Lanka. This is the very first time
that international guests have come to Sikkim for butterfly watching, said the
Butterfly Society of Sikkim – TPCF.
The
Butterthon was also joined by Fahim Khan, Savita, and Sarpita Bose from
Maharashtra and Pune, along with Subhajit Roy, Bias Chakraborty, Aaratrik Pal,
and Amit Chakraborty from Kolkata and Cooch Behar.
The
Butterthon is being carried out in various parts of Sikkim by the members of
Butterfly Society of Sikkim.
“The
main purpose of this Butterthon is to express and contribute in the celebration
of Sikkim’s 50 glorious years of Statehood by the butterfly enthusiasts of
Sikkim. It also aims to promote butterfly watching tourism in Sikkim to a
larger scale so that youths can take it as a profession. Sikkim being a small State
with only 7086 sq km hosts around 60% of the butterflies in the country.
Therefore this is a strong component of ecotourism and potential that needs to
be nourished and served,” said Butterfly Society of
Sikkim – TPCF chief advisor Nosang Limboo.
