PAKYONG, (IPR): District Collector, Pakyong, PariBishnoi, along with Senior Superintendent of Police, Pakyong, ParuRuchal, today inspected the landslide-affected stretch at 20th Mile, Bardang, on National Highway-10 to assess the situation following continuous rainfall and review the ongoing restoration works.

The inspection team comprised the Additional District Collector, Pakyong; Additional Superintendent of Police; Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Rangpo; Superintending Engineer, Divisional Engineer and Assistant Engineer, Roads and Bridges Department; Revenue Officer/Assistant Director; officials from the Civil and Mechanical Wings of the Roads and Bridges Department; and representatives from the Police, Irrigation, Land Revenue and Disaster Management, Information and Public Relations Department, NHIDCL and other concerned agencies.

During the inspection, officials briefed the team on the extent of the damage caused by the landslide, which led to the accumulation of large boulders, mud and debris, disrupting vehicular movement along the highway. The team reviewed the emergency restoration and debris clearance operations being carried out by NHIDCL in coordination with the Roads and Bridges Department.

Reviewing the restoration works, the District Collector sought details on the deployment of machinery, work schedules, debris disposal and the damage to essential infrastructure, including power lines. She directed the executing agencies to deploy additional machinery and manpower, adopt suitable technical interventions, and expedite the restoration process while ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols. She also instructed the concerned agencies to examine long-term slope stabilisation measures, including the installation of wire mesh and protective barriers at vulnerable locations.

To strengthen monitoring and coordination, it was decided to constitute a committee comprising engineers from the Roads and Bridges Department, NHIDCL and the Public Works Department, along with the concerned SDM and Police officials. The committee will oversee the restoration works, coordinate among departments, and ensure the submission of daily reports on road conditions, work progress, machinery deployment, site photographs and operational updates to facilitate timely decision-making.

The District Collector further reviewed the traffic management arrangements and directed the Police Department to regulate traffic, prevent congestion near the affected stretch, deploy personnel at strategic locations, and facilitate the diversion of vehicles through designated alternate routes until normal traffic movement is restored. She also instructed the installation of floodlights at the work site to facilitate restoration activities during night hours and emphasised the need for continuous monitoring of the vulnerable stretch in view of the prevailing weather conditions.

Senior Superintendent of Police, ParuRuchal, advised NHIDCL to accord the restoration works the highest priority by strengthening slope protection measures through appropriate ground stabilisation and the installation of protective barriers at vulnerable locations.

It was further decided to pool machinery and manpower from various departments to expedite the restoration works. Machine operators and supporting personnel will be deployed in shifts on a rotational basis to ensure uninterrupted operations while maintaining the safety of all personnel engaged at the site.
