GANGTOK, : Delhi
Public School (DPS), Gangtok emerged as the overall champion at the two-day
inter-school taekwondo poomsae championship, which concluded here on Sunday.
The
championship was jointly organised by DPS Gangtok and Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo
Association (SATA).
The
event featured competitions in the sub-junior, cadet and junior categories in
individual, pair and team poomsae events, with participation from several
schools.
Grace
Academy finished first runner-up, while Greendale School finished as the second
runner-up.
St
Xavier's School was named the “best freestyle school”, while Amitabha School
received the “best disciplined school” award.
The
closing ceremony was attended by Health minister G.T. Dhungel as the chief
guest and former MLA Krishna Kumari Rai as the guest of honour.
Addressing
the gathering, Dhungel congratulated the organisers and participating schools
and appreciated the efforts of coaches, teachers and officials. He stressed the
importance of sports and extracurricular activities in developing active,
resilient and disciplined young people.
SATA
general secretary Suman Tamang praised DPS Gangtok for organising the
championship and said the association had been collaborating with DPS and
Amitabha School to promote taekwondo and encourage students to take up sports.
A
taekwondo demonstration by SATA athletes was also held during the closing
ceremony.
DPS
Gangtok expressed gratitude to the participating schools, athletes, coaches,
referees and SATA for their support in making the championship a success.
The
school said it was privileged to provide a platform for young athletes to
challenge themselves, showcase their abilities and celebrate the spirit of
sportsmanship. “The championship brought together students from different
schools and age groups, highlighting how sport can foster discipline,
camaraderie and healthy competition while inspiring young people to pursue
their sporting aspirations.”
