GEYZING,: Rajen Gurung, 47, tragically lost his life on Saturday night after being buried alive in a landslide that took place just beside his resident. Gurung, who was serving as a panchayat president of Sardung-Lungjik GPU under Maneybung-Dentam constituency, had stepped out around 7 pm to manage the excess flow of rain water by digging trenches close to his residence when the landslide struck and he was swept away. Gurung is survived by two sons.
Three cows housed in a nearby shed were also killed.
Area MLA Sudesh Limboo promptly reached the site on Saturday night and personally took part in the rescue efforts. On Sunday morning, he met the affected family, accompanied by zilla upadhakshya Anita Rai, DC Tenzing D. Denzongpa and officials from various line departments.
Sudesh asserted all possible help from State government for required rehabilitation of the affected family.
DC Denzongpa handed over ex-gratia to the family members of deceased and assured further help after necessary assessment.
Similarly, landslides triggered by heavy rain have wreaked havoc in Barseybung and Sirinchok village of Naku-Sindrabung GPU in Yangthang constituency. Many households in the area have been affected due to landslide. In view of the risk of further deterioration of situation in the area continuous rains, 10 families have been shifted to a safer location. The local panchayat members have extended necessary help to the affected families and are monitoring the situation.
