The Top India Survey Shows Bollywood’s Real Crisis Is Happening Behind the Camera

When people think about Bollywood, they usually imagine celebrities, luxury lifestyles, film promotions, and packed movie sets. But according to a recent survey by The Top India, the people working behind those movie sets are currently facing one of the toughest periods in recent years.

The survey, based on interactions with more than 1,000 entertainment industry workers, suggests that a large number of professionals are struggling to find regular work. Even those getting projects are reportedly facing heavy cuts in payments compared to previous years.

Many respondents claimed their income has dropped by nearly 50 to 60 percent. The impact is being felt across film sets, television productions, and digital content shoots.

The crisis is not limited to one department. Assistant directors, spot boys, makeup artists, camera crews, lightmen, costume assistants, gym trainers, junior artists, and equipment rental suppliers are all reportedly affected by the slowdown.

Industry professionals say the biggest problem is uncertainty. Earlier, workers could expect back-to-back projects through the year. Now, long gaps between assignments have become common. Some projects are delayed, while others are being cancelled due to budget concerns.

People associated with production teams also claim that payments are taking longer than before. Freelancers who once received payments quickly are now waiting weeks or even months after completing their work.

Meanwhile, the cost of surviving in Mumbai continues to rise. Since most entertainment activity is concentrated around Andheri, Juhu, and Bandra, workers often have no option but to stay close to these areas despite the expensive rent.

For thousands of industry workers, the issue is no longer about career growth. It is about maintaining basic financial stability.

The findings from The Top India also highlight how deeply connected the entertainment ecosystem really is. When fewer films and shows go on floors, the impact spreads quickly across hundreds of supporting jobs linked to a single production.

The glamour of Bollywood may still attract attention worldwide, but for many workers behind the scenes, this phase has become a test of patience, resilience, and survival.
