South District Administration does a rain-check
on monsoon preparedness |
A meeting of the District Level Relief Committee
(DLRC) chaired by the District Collector, South
AK Das was held at DAC Conference Hall here to
discuss about the action plan prepared by each
of the departments in mitigation and undertaking
relief measures in case of any monsoon disaster
and to appraise the house about their
preparedness levels.
During the department wise discussion, State UD&HD
AE informed that the order has been passed for
stopping of all excavation work till the
completion of monsoon period. He further
informed that few private constructions were
reported to be taking place despite the order,
for which the District Collector directed the
department to report all such cases to the
Collectorate.
Timely cleaning up of the jhoras within the
bazaar area by UD&HD personal was also reported.
The District Collector emphasized that any work
within the bazaar area undertaken by any of the
department should be reported to he Collector as
well as the UD&HD.
AE PHED apprised the meeting that vulnerable
areas in Namchi, Ravangla, Melli, Temi Tarku etc
have been identified and mitigation plan kept
ready in case of any problem. A staff was
reported to be stationed at Barmeli source to
attend to any problem which arises, he said. |

Dept on a drive to promote ‘green gold’ &
mandarin orange |
The State Horticulture and Cash Crop Department
will be planting bamboo saplings in about 800
hectares of land in the East District in which
about 100 hectares of land will be used in
Khamdong and Samdong regions.
The department additional director Ashal
Thapa said this while terming bamboo plant as
the green gold in the region since it yields
benefit the people.
In a recently issued press release, Mr. Thapa
has informed that the department had planted
Choya variety of bamboo in Khamdong area. This
bamboo plant, he said was very useful for the
people since it conserves 50 percent carbon
dioxide and generates much more oxygen for
healthy breathing.
“There are 13 types of bamboo found in Sikkim
and for the people the products from the plant
are totally organic, hence the department feels
that every rural household should carry out
bamboo plantation in their own field for their
wellbeing,” the additional director said.
Informing that the State Bamboo Mission started
in Sikkim in 2007, Mr. Thapa said bamboo
treatment plant is going to be constructed in
Rangpo at the earliest. |

Remote Ramom village gets clean drinking water |
The Bhavishya Bharat Foundation has started
drinking water supply project in Ramom village
in North Sikkim as part of corporate social
responsibility of Teesta Urja Stage III HEP in
North Sikkim.
Working on ‘fast forward’ mode for the last six
months, the project was completed on June 29
this year.
About 100 residents of Ramom village comprising
of 26 households, a primary school, ICDS and a
Gompa will receive drinking water in their
respective homes, informs a press release issued
by Col (Retd) Mani K Gahatraj, Deputy Director,
Bhavishya Bharat Foundation.
The system yields 5000 ltrs of water per day
whereas the actual requirement of the village is
3000 ltrs per day.
Now, the village has neither temporary rubber
pipes from unsurveyed sources nor drying up of
water source during winter months.
“It was a difficult and uphill task to find a
viable source, construct collection tank, lay
pipelines over a steep jungle along the contour
and connect pipes network to each house.
Engineers, supervisors, a lone plumber and
villagers worked day night in leech infested
jungle to make it happen,” the release said. |

SBI observes founding day with health camp |
The State Bank of India, Gangtok Branch today
observed its founding day with a free health
check up camp for senior citizens and pension
holders at the bank here today.
Textbooks were also distributed to the
financially deprived students of various schools
on the occasion.
Speaking with media persons here today, the
assistant manager, SBI RP Roy said SBI had
opened its first branch in Sikkim in 1966 and
since then they have been catering its services
to the people of the State. Presently, the bank
has 27 branches all across the state with 27,000
account holders, he said.
Interestingly, 74-year-old DK Khati, one of the
oldest customers of the bank also attended the
health camp. Mr. Khati had opened his account in
the bank in 1967 with 163 as his serial number,
Mr Roy said.
Similarly, the founding day of the bank was
celebrated at SBI, Namchi Branch with similar
programmes. Around 50 pensioners who were
present today were given free health check up. |

Don’t compromise on quality of road works: CM |
|
The Chief Minister Pawan
Chamling has directed the officials of Sikkim
Roads and Bridges Department not to compromise
with the quality of the work while carrying out
the construction of motorable roads in the
remote areas of the State.
“The construction of rural roads should
be done in a modernised way complying with the
rules of the Government,” Mr Chamling said.
Addressing a host of department officials on
June 30, the Chief Minister also told the
officials to be more innovative and work
oriented while implementing all public friendly
policies. He
further said that the department should go for
be re-tendering of all the projects which comes
above Rs 10 Crores. “All the new constructions
of the roads will be done under PMGSY scheme and
the roads in the bazaar areas will be taken up
by UD&HD,” the Chief Minister said. He added
that a strict departmental action will be
initiated to the contractors who fail to give
quality works. |

Govt appoints Commission of Inquiry to look into
public allegations |

Concerned over the
allegations raised by members of the general
public that sufficient local employment has not
been provided in various business establishments
in the State in violation of the terms of
agreement/ licensing conditions entered into by
the said companies/units with the State
Government, the State Government has notified
the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry to
look into the allegations.
In exercise of the powers conferred by
sub-Section (1) of Section 3 read with
sub-section (1) of Section 5 of the Commission
of Inquiry Act, 1952 (60 of 1952), the State has
vide notification No 82/Home 2009 dated June 25
appointed a Commission of Inquiry consisting of
retired Chief Justice of the High Court of
Sikkim RK Patra to inquire and report within
three months from the date of publication of the
notification. |
