Chiwabhanjyang 10K Trail Run challenges runners with 3,700-ft ascent to 10,300 ft

GEYZING, : The second edition of the Chiwabhanjyang 10K Trail Run 2025, from Uttarey in West Sikkim to the Indo-Nepal border point at Chiwabhanjyang, was held today.

The marathon began from Titanic Park, Uttarey Bazar and was flagged off by Soreng-Chakung MLA Aditya Golay, who was joined by area MLA Sudesh Kumar Limboo, Rinchenpong MLA Erung Tenzing Lepcha, Gyalshing DC Tenzing D. Denzongpa, Dentam SDM N.K. Karki and several other dignitaries and officials.

Athletes from across Sikkim, different Indian States, and neighbouring country of Nepal participated in the race. The 10-kilometer route passed through Kunabar, Dhanpale, Fedikhola and Chitrey before culminating at Chiwabhanjyang, a challenging trail with an elevation gain from 6,600 ft at Uttarey to 10,300 ft at the finish line.

MLA Aditya Golay also participated in the run.

The trail run has emerged as a flagship initiative for promoting sports and sustainable tourism in West Sikkim. Speaking at the event, MLA Sudesh Kumar Subba said the race promotes “responsible tourism for a sustainable tomorrow.”

Covering rugged mountain terrain, lush forests and panoramic Himalayan vistas, the trail tested participants’ endurance while showcasing Sikkim’s pristine natural beauty. MLA Golay stated that such events introduce visitors to the State’s rich cultural heritage and positively impact the local economy.

Online registration for the Chiwabhanjyang 10K Trail Run began on September 17, attracting over 200 runners across four categories.

Deputy Speaker Rajkumari Thapa presented the medals and cash prizes to the winners at Chiwabhanjyang.

2nd – Bandana Subba (Bijanbari, Darjeeling)

3rd – Binita Kami (Singtam, East Sikkim)

 

Men (18-35 years):

1st – Ganga Hang Subba (Uttarey)

2nd – Samant Rai (Sukhia Pokhari, Darjeeling)

3rd – Nimsang Limbu (Sikkim)

 

Age Group 36-49 (Men):

1st – Leela Nath Karki (Uttarey)

2nd – Ambar Bahadur Limbu

3rd – Sarwan Chettri

 

Age Group 50–59 (Men):

1st – Upman Chettri (Pherek)

2nd – Jit Bahadur Limbu (Rimbik)

3rd – Sachit Thapa (Mirik)

 

Age Group 60 and Above (Men):

1st – Birman Tamang (Darjeeling)

2nd – Phurba Sherpa

3rd – L.M. Subba (Uttarey)

 

Age Group 60 and Above (Women):
