GANGTOK, : The Sikkim Akademi and literary group Chiya Kavita Sikkim are jointly organising a one-day poetry programme to celebrate the life of ‘Mato Kavi’ Jiwan Theeng on October 18.

Theeng, who passed away in 1978 at the young age of 23, is considered to be one of the most outstanding Nepali poets and writers of Sikkim. He is also referred to as a revolutionary youth poet in Nepali literary circles.

Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, Sikkim Akademi president SR Subba emphasized that the Sikkimese society must not forget the literary contributions of Jiwan Theeng. “From our part, the Sikkim Akademi in collaboration with Chiya Kavita is holding a poetry programme on October 18 in his memory. Poets from across Sikkim would be attending the event and share their poems based on the life and works of ‘Mato Kavi’ Jiwan Theeng,” he said.

The literary event titled ‘Mato Kavi Jiwan Theeng Kavita Utsav 2025’ is scheduled to be held at SC Bhavan, Development Area here. Interestingly, the road in Development Area of Gangtok is named as Jiwan Theeng Marg in the poet’s honour in the late 80s.

Born in 1955, Theeng was the eldest son of Karsang and Dolmi Theeng of Sichey in Gangtok. Sikkim was a kingdom at that time.

Theeng went on to acquire a master’s degree in political science from North Bengal University. His work is imbued with a passionate love for his hill homeland.

Sikkim Akademi president SR Subba along with general secretary Purna Yonzone shared that the institution aims to make ‘Mato Kavi Jiwan Theeng Kavita Utsav’ a yearly event.

“However, the president and general secretary of Sikkim Akademi are appointed by the State government for a period of three years and our terms are nearing completion. We would be delighted if the new president and general secretary of Sikkim Akademi continue with this initiative annually as a tribute to Jiwan Theeng,” he said.

Representing Chiya Kavita, Prabin Khaling said about 60 poets from different parts of Sikkim are attending the literary event on October 18. We will witness poems in English, Nepali, and Hindi dedicated to the ‘Mato Kavi’ besides a presentation on the life and works of Jiwan Theeng, he said.

The press meet was also addressed by Sikkim Akademi general secretary Purna Yonzone and secretary (administration) PL Sharma.
