Seven Sikkim taekwondo players to represent India at world championships

GANGTOK, : Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association today announced that seven of its taekwondo players have been named in the Indian team for the upcoming Chuncheon World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships 2026 scheduled to be held in Chuncheon, South Korea from September 16 to 20.

Trilok Subba will compete in Recognised Poomsae Master Category, Reyong Hangma Rai in Recognised Individual Poomsae, while Ismarika Gurung, Kelzang Yudon Bhutia, Chendi Gyaltsen Bhutia, Rinzen Choden Bhutia and Ansh Gurung comprise the Freestyle Mixed Poomsae Team.

SATA said the players will depart for Korea on September 13.

Today, the SATA also felicitated the seven players and revealed the team jersey.

General secretary Suman Tamang expressed pride and honour for the the association on the selection of the seven players. He extended his best wishes to the athletes, hoping that they perform with confidence, discipline and determination, and make a mark in the world championship.

Coach Ugen Lepcha, who is Sikkim's only Commonwealth gold medallist, stated that he feels very fortunate to have been able to train the athletes for the championship. The players have been training with a lot of discipline and dedication, honing their skills and sharpness, he said.

Dronacharya awardee boxing coach Sandhya Gurung also extended her encouragement to the athletes, urging them to perform without fear.

Sikkim Athletes Association general secretary oRajiv Roka stated that having seven athletes from Sikkim to represent India in a prestigious world championship is a matter of great pride for the State.

State Sports Development Board chairman Rinzing Wangyal Chopel extended encouragement on behalf of the government, stating that this championship is a great step forward for the athletes. He assured that even after the championship, the board and the government will always stand to support the association and its athletes.
