GANGTOK,: ‘Sikkim Coffee’ was one of 16 coffee startups selected by the Coffee Board of India to have an exhibition counter under startup pavilion during the 5th World Coffee Conference (WCC) 2023 held in Bangalore, from September 25 to 28. Sikkim’s own coffee brand by Sangpo Tenzin and his wife Tashi Choden was also among the startup committee members for the event.

The World Coffee Conference (WCC) is a prestigious event that brings together the global coffee community to discuss critical topics facing the sector. It is held every four to five years by the International Coffee Organization (ICO), an intergovernmental organization that represents all coffee-producing and consuming countries.

This was the first time that the event was held in Asia, and the rarity of this event makes it an exceptional occurrence and the fact that it was hosted in India, adds to its exceptional nature. The theme of the conference was "Sustainability through Circular Economy and Regenerative Agriculture."

Participants of the event included major players in the Indian coffee landscape like Starbucks, Blue Tokai, Nescafé, Tata, Brew, CCD, and many others.

‘Sikkim Coffee’ was recognized as one of India's top 16 startups by the Coffee Board of India, alongside Lithanro, a noteworthy brand hailing from Nagaland.

“Sikkim Coffee, established in 2021, is a farm and roastery from India’s first organic state. Our beans are 100% Arabica, grown at 1,300 meters above sea level, developing their unique character with the Himalayan air. The Local Cafe and Sikkim Coffee are sister brands from Sikkim under the Himaliano group on a mission to spread Himalayan culture. We are proud to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime event at the World Coffee Conference, where the global coffee community comes together to explore, innovate, and advocate for a sustainable and prosperous future,” expressed Tenzin to SIKKIM EXPRESS.

The WCC program included a mix of plenary sessions, panel discussions, workshops, and networking events. It is an important event for the global coffee community, and it plays a vital role in promoting the sustainable development of the coffee sector.
