GANGTOK,: A massive apolitical rally will be held in Gangtok on April 17 to
demonstrate Sikkim’s support for and welcome the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam
(Women’s Reservation Act).
Addressing
a press conference here on Tuesday, Sikkim Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker
Raj KumariThapa described the Act as a historic measure by the Union
government, providing 33 per cent reservation for women in the LokSabha and
State Legislative Assemblies.
She
said the legislation would enable women to participate in policy-making and
showcase their capabilities and potential. Calling its passage in Parliament a
landmark moment for women’s empowerment, she expressed gratitude to Prime
Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay.
Thapa
added that under the leadership of the Chief Minister, women in Sikkim have
been given opportunities across sectors, including politics, bureaucracy and
allied fields, enabling them to lead and grow.
The
rally, scheduled to begin at 10 am from Deorali Tata Stand, will conclude at
Paljor Stadium. She appealed to women across the State to
participate in the event.
The
press conference was also addressed by Upper Burtuk MLA and vice-chairman of
the rally organising committee, Kala Rai. It was attended by Gnathang-Machong
MLA Pamin Lepcha, ZillaAdhakshyas of Namchi, Pakyong and Soreng,
councillorTsheringPaldenBhutia, chairpersons of various departments, and other
dignitaries.
In
September 2023, Parliament passed the Nari Shakti VandanAdhiniyam, commonly
known as the Women’s Reservation Act, marking a significant step towards
enhancing women’s representation in legislative bodies. The Act provides for
one-third reservation of seats for women in the LokSabha and State Legislative
Assemblies.
To
facilitate its implementation from the 2029 LokSabha elections, the Union
government is set to hold a special three-day sitting from April 16 to consider
amendments to the law.
