Gangtok civic body adjudged cleanest ULB in Sikkim

GANGTOK, : The Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) was on Saturday awarded the title of the cleanest Urban Local Body (ULB) in Sikkim during the 157th Gandhi Jayanti celebrations held at MG Marg here.

The Chandmari ward was adjudged the cleanest ward under the GMC.

The GMC team expressed happiness after receiving the award, while Safai Mitras thanked Chief Minister P.S. Golay for the recognition.

Municipal Commissioner Gary Chopel described the achievement as “almost like winning the World Cup” and said the civic body would begin work from Sunday to retain the top position.

“It is difficult to stay at the top, so we will start working towards that goal from tomorrow onwards,” Chopel said, crediting the achievement to the people of Gangtok.

Gangtok mayor Tshering Palden Bhutia said the award was the result of initiatives undertaken by the GMC during the tenure of the third council.

She urged residents to take ownership of their surroundings and contribute towards keeping the city clean.

The Cleanest Urban Local Body award carries a cash prize of Rs 8 lakh.
